Gulf of Mexico..is it dying?

  • This is not an environmental disaster, and I will say that again and again because it is a natural phenomenon. Oil has seeped into this ocean for centuries. ~ Representative Don Young, (R) Alaska.

~ Sea Shepherd:.... Everyone is wondering whether BP and the US government are doing enough to protect and clean up the Gulf of Mexico from the horrendous spill originating at the Deepwater Horizon oilrig. After 10 hours of flying over the disaster area, we can tell you that they are not.

Open Secrets keeps tabs on the flow of money to Congress that impact legislation.

BP is listed as a "heavy hitter" spending in 2010 over $100,000 to campaigns, over 60% of which was contributed to Republicans. This is not an election year.

In the 2008 election cycle BP gave well over a half a million dollars to mostly Republican candidates. A few Democrats received money as well.

I take offense at critics who choose to somehow blame this disaster on Obama instead of BP and the failed MMS. While it might be nice to think Obama could have changed the MSS as a priority, the fact is he inherited a lot of trouble from the Bush administration and absent this disaster, the MMS had to be lower on his "to do" list than the economy, jobs and health care. Had the prior administration not consisted of two long time oil men, the MMS would have been doing it's job all along. The short cuts made by BP to save money are not new...they have been permitted to cut corners for decades by prior administrations.

* FYI. Just because I built this site to condemn some really bad, self-serving behaviour by Senate and other Republicans, does not mean I let the Democrats off the hook. While they have behaved well in light of the disaster, they still have skeletons in their own closet for many years of saying nothing as the major oil companies had their way.

* Senate Republicans continue to protect their bosses at BP. Is this treason given that BP is a foreign owned corporation, is their blocking investigations of possible criminal actions is shielding a foreign corporation or power from US Law? Read more...

BP, with a record of 760 drilling safety and environmental violations—was granted safety waiver over the past three years in order to operate the deep water drilling rig that ultimately created the worst environmental disaster in US history. Exxon by contrast, had only one violation. Read More...

* Amidst complaints and allegations that BP is threatening to fire cleanup workers if they wear respirators I decided to send a letter to each regional OSHA agency who should be protecting the health and safety of these workers. You can view a PDF copy of my letter here.

* Our sad loss of mass transit at the hands of Big Oil and Detroit Iron.

But in the years between 1936 and 1950, there took place one of the sorriest events in our nation's history--what has become known as the "Great American Streetcar Scandal." A number of large corporations, including General Motors, Firestone Tire, Standard Oil of California, and Phillips Petroleum, operating secretly through front organizations, conspired to purchase streetcar systems in forty- five major U.S. cities, including Detroit, New York City, Oakland, Philadelphia, Phoenix, St. Louis, Salt Lake City, Tulsa, Baltimore, Chicago, Minneapolis, and Los Angeles. The consortium then proceeded to completely dismantle the trolley systems, ripping up their tracks and tearing down their overhead wires. They were charged and found guilty and each fined $1 ! Yes One Dollar each for destroying public transportation in America.
